Headteacher’s Message:
A fantastic way to end the penultimate week of term: enjoying raising money for Comic Relief with all things red and crazy hair!
The children have also explored the difference that funds raised today makes to the lives of children and families.
We have, once again packed a huge amount in, with so much to celebrate - please do have a read about some of the highlights.
As you will see, next week is also a busy one as we enjoy additional Easter and end of term activities as well as the Speaking Out Competition (Thurs 21st at 9.15am - parents welcome).
Parents are also very welcome to the Easter Service at St Mark's Church (9.45 on Tuesday).
It promises to be a really lovely (short) where all the children will be involved in exploring the Easter story through drama, musical performances and songs.
Have a super weekend,
Mrs A Fitch and the Staff Team
Year 5 went on a trip to Gloucester this week. They visited the Docks, looking at its structure and explored the role that the Docks have played in the history and development of Gloucester. They also took lots of photos of the buildings and reflections in the water in preparation for their final art piece on Pointillism.
This year the team were lucky enough to secure a visit to Gloucester Prison as well. The prison was operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service and closed in 2013 and now is only open for educational tours. Our tour was led by former serving Governor of the prison, who gave them real insight into what it would have felt like to be an inmate at the prison.
The children were shown the prison yard where the inmates would have exercised and got to go inside a prisoner transportation vehicle, informally known as a "Sweat Box" or “Court Bus” amongst British prisoners. They were also shown the prison cells in which the children were amazed to only find a metal bed, toilet and sink! It was freezing cold, dark and extremely dirty too. They particularly enjoyed eating their lunch in the lunch hall where the prisoners would have actually eaten.
We were so impressed by how well the children immersed themselves in the trip. They were so polite and listened brilliantly and were true ambassadors for out school.
We’ve had an actioned packed week celebrating the love of reading during our joint Festival of Literature with Benhall.
On World Book day itself, children visited Benhall (and we also welcomed Benhall Children) for a shared activity on the book Flotsam. They also took time out to cosy up with a good book and hot chocolate, which of course was enjoyed by all.
The Book Fair and Book Pledge has been a huge success and thank you to everyone who came along to the Fair and/or picked up a book pledge cover! As always your support is invaluable and the children will benefit so much from your generosity. Particular thanks to our wonderful House Captains who gave up their time before and after school to make the Book Pledge happen.
Also a huge thank you to everyone who pre-ordered Jodie Garnish and P.G. Bell books for the visiting authors to sign this week. From the commission raised we were given these books for free!!!
The books will be distributed to the classrooms for the children to enjoy.
Author Visits
The children were visited by 2 authors this week. On Tuesday Jodie Garnish author of The Spectaculars visited year 3 and 4. She talked to the children about how she became an author and how to create stories, make characters and scenes. They started to develop a story together in the session and if any children wants to finish the story at home she said that she would happily read them!
Today the year 5 and 6 participated in a workshop with the author P.G. Bell. The children learnt how to use the ‘magic ingredients’ to create their own exciting stories. We look forward to reading some of the outcomes in the near future.
The girls team had their last league match this week. They played Lakeside at home, putting in another outstanding performance.
We had good control of the game from start to finish and the final result was a 5 - 1 win to St Mark’s!
The girls are growing in confidence the more games we play and have really done the themselves and the whole school proud.
This makes St Mark’s league winners as we have won all matches!
A huge congratulations to the whole team and to Mrs Campbell for her time, help and support.
Girls Team
Another win this week for St Mark’s girls’ football team against Ashley Manor. The girls had to work very hard on what seemed like a very big pitch, putting in an impressive performance, winning 5 - 1.
They were absolutely brilliant and we so proud of the whole team!
Boys Team
A thrilling match was played by the boys' football team on Thursday afternoon against Ashley Manor. Facing tough competition, we were 2-0 up by half-time before the opposition levelled the match just after. In an exciting final ten minutes, the team kept pushing forward to secure a 4-2 win - continuing an unbeaten run of games.
Well done!!!
On Thursday competitors from year 5 and 6 took part in a Gymnastic Competition. The girls were absolutely amazing and relished the opportunity to represent our school. They were up against very tough competition and really rose to the challenge. A huge congratulations to you all, we are so proud of you!
Seven children from year 3 and 4 attended a Gymnastics competition on Thursday morning. Following an energetic warm-up and numerous stretches the children performed their floor exercise. This involved the children performing a sequence of 10 moves. The children also competed on the vault finishing with a straight or tucked jump when landing.
We competed against seven other schools and overall the team came third, coming away with bronze medals. Annabelle also won an individual bronze medal on the floor.
Such an amazing team effort and huge congratulations to the girls!
The year 6 children were a hive of activity last week preparing and setting up their stalls for the Christmas Fair. They worked extremely hard from the concept stage to the making of their goods. In addition they had to promote, design and set up their stalls, as well as encourage customers to either buy their products, guess the name of the teddy or play a game to win prizes! You can see from the photos how much work went into the event.
The children made an impressive £653.66. Well done year 6, we are super proud of you all!
The money raised will go towards their year 6 leavers book and contribute towards the leavers hoodies too.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
