House Captains

Role and Expectations of House and Vice House Captains

The roles of House and Vice House Captains are ones of privilege, pride and responsibility. They are more than just a title and badge and require dedication and commitment for an entire year. The children take part in active citizenship, whereby they lead a range of interschool activities throughout the year.

At the beginning of each year, up to two House Captains and two Vice Captains are elected for each house by the Headteacher and the Year 6 Teaching Team. Those wishing to be considered for the role submit a letter about what they can offer their house.

Every House Captain brings their own unique skills, strengths and ideas to the role, helping to make a positive difference to our school community.

What Makes a Great House Captain?

Our House Captains and Vice House Captains are expected to:

  • Be polite, well-mannered and friendly
  • Support and encourage children in their own house
  • Have excellent organisational skills and show commitment to the role
  • Communicate confidently, including when speaking in front of others.
  • Take pride in their appearance and wear their uniform smartly
  • Be able to liaise and converse with staff, students and the wider community
  • Act responsibly and be a role model for other students, demonstrating St Mark’s values
  • Be caring, mature and honest

What Do Our House Captains Do?

Our House Captains take an active role in school life and develop their leadership skills through a range of responsibilities. These include:

  • Leading and supporting the children of their House in a variety of House Competitions
  • Working closely with the Year 6 Teaching Team, providing ideas and support for competitions and House related activities
  • Helping to organise and lead House Meetings and House Assemblies
  • Inspiring the children in their House
  • Helping at events outside the normal school day, such as school fetes and after-school bake sales

Being a House Captain is a wonderful opportunity for our Year 6 pupils to make a positive difference to school life, develop confidence and communication skills, and learn the importance of teamwork and active citizenship. We are proud of the responsibility they take on and the positive example they set for everyone at St Mark’s.
